With the accelerating convergence of networks, devices, software, services, and content, the old boundaries that separated the actors across the telecommunications industry value chain are blurring. This rapid change in markets and usages is further accelerating the pace of innovation in an industry where cycles were already very short. Both the individual and business segments are affected. Cloud computing, 4G, ultra-fast broadband, quadruple-play offers, Internet of Things—these are the battlegrounds where the telecoms leaders of the future will be determined. Amid this rapid change, incumbents and new entrants—who increasingly struggle to ensure good returns on investment in the mature markets—will have to intensify efforts to expand their positions.
