Life as a consultant

The projects

With a 100 offices in over 60 countries throughout the world, McKinsey serves an unrivaled range of clients across a wide variety of sectors. Some examples of our client work include: supporting the expansion of a luxury-goods giant in Asia, helping to define marketing strategy for the smartphone of the future for a big telecoms operator, supporting the merger of two financial institutions, reducing waste throughout the supply chain for a food company, improving the performance of hospital emergency services in a developing country, defining a growth strategy for a large national museum. This variety allows each one of us to find our path and to make a difference on issues that are close to our hearts.

Thanks to the strength of our global network of consultants, we are in a unique position to advise our clients, including the CEOs of the world’s biggest companies and their teams, members of their boards of directors, heads of NGOs and institutions, governments, and public-sector decision makers. Our work involves helping to make lasting change throughout these organizations, at all levels, through direct on-site contact. Our consultants draw constantly on the support of their teams and on our extensive collection of proprietary tools, knowledge, and specialists, as well as on our coaching and training programs. This helps them drive projects forward and create lasting impact for clients.

International opportunities

We operate as one global firm. This unique structure makes it easy for our consultants to work on client engagements all over the world and develop lasting relationships with outstanding people, both within and outside McKinsey.

We offer a variety of opportunities for international experience:

  • Engagement loan:

You relocate to an office abroad to participate in a project lasting from a few weeks to many months.

  • Transfer:

You join another office for a specific period depending on your aspirations and the needs of the office.

  • Global Rotation Program:

After the end of your first year as a consultant, you can do two back-to-back rotations in countries of your choice, for a period of 6 to 9 months.

  • Long-term or permanent transfer:

This kind of transfer is sometimes possible when you would like to join another office for professional or personal reasons.

Life in the French office

Team spirit is an essential value in our offices. In addition to client projects—all of which are conducted in teams—McKinsey colleagues in France participate in office retreats, voluntary work, sports events, seminars, and more.

In France, we offer new consultants an orientation week soon after their arrival. During this period they are introduced to the tools and resources they will need to serve clients to the best of their abilities. The orientation week also gives them the chance to get to know each other and their other McKinsey colleagues—in fact, many long-lasting friendships take root at this time.

All new consultants are welcomed by a “buddy,” a more experienced consultant who will accompany them over the course of their first few weeks in our office, and with whom they will maintain a special relationship throughout their McKinsey careers.

We pay particular attention to help you finding the right work-life balance, and we offer a number of flexibility options.

At McKinsey we give a high priority to diversity: women benefit from a specific internal global program—established at the initiative of the French office—and are offered a personal mentorship over the course of their careers.
