Why McKinsey

Being an IT person, I had no knowledge of McKinsey beyond its reputation as a top management consulting firm when the opportunity to join the firm arose. I merely thought it would be a good place to work based upon hearing it is one of the most preferred companies by MBA graduates. Later when I visited the firm and saw the people as well as the working environment, I felt very different. I had only brief interactions with firm people prior to joining it, but the way everyone carried themselves and explained to me about life in McKinsey made a lasting impression. That experience alone was a good enough motivator for me in deciding to join McKinsey.

McKinsey is true to its mission of developing people. Several years back, when I wanted to have new experiences and challenge myself, a director from the Sydney office took the time to listen to my concerns and coached me on how I can find the right answer on my own. His advice, which reflected ample experience, stayed with me and made me realize how special McKinsey’s culture is. The firm expects everyone to devote time to listen and respect one another’s opinions. In that regard, McKinsey’s culture has definitely changed me in a positive way.

McKinsey’s culture

Another part of the culture is the diversity. For several months I was involved in an Asia project that brought together a virtual team of colleagues from several overseas offices. While trying to achieve the same goal, it was rewarding to work with colleagues who have different ways of working and came from various cultural backgrounds. We not only shared our project-related knowledge but also got to demonstrate our individual capabilities and enjoyed the feeling of contributing to the team. I truly believe it is a precious opportunity to be able to expand ones thinking in a global environment and I get plenty of opportunities to do so, which I find a quite rewarding experience.
