Why McKinsey
Pondering my next career move upon graduating from business school, the simplest path would have been to return to where I had worked for seven years–I was completely accustomed to the system and people, and I would easily be successful. The other road was to change my direction to be a consultant at McKinsey, which would bring new challenges. Analyzing the pros and cons, I was firmly determined to join McKinsey not only because of its stellar reputation as a strategic management consulting firm but because it was also known for creating real impact on society. I also believed that it would accelerate my own personal skills in a dramatically short time.
As soon as I joined McKinsey as an associate I was convinced and satisfied that I made the right choice. The way the firm tries to help you in every possible manner is really great and I enjoy very much learning from my colleagues.
Social impact
McKinsey is very conscious of the potential social impact of its work, even while engaging in business projects. I was part of several teams that could have made recommendations that might benefit the client but harm society. We always adhered to our values of having positive social impact regardless of how challenging it may be.
The firm engages in various studies and projects that have substantial impact on organizations and governments. The impact could be on a global scale through pro bono projects and assisting crucial global research in areas such as green growth. I was lucky to volunteer for one of these activities creating value for our community.
Dramatic personal development
I also find that McKinsey constantly presents interesting intellectual challenges. In every problem-solving session, the team rigorously challenges the logic of the proposed approach and effectiveness of delivery. Just like working out helps develop muscles, the intellectual challenge and debates about rationales with team members strengthen my logical thinking and communication skills.
McKinsey also has a very advanced and organized training system. The firm has built my consulting skills from zero, reinforcing them in periodic follow-on training sessions. Even without a traditional background befitting some consultants, I didn’t encounter any major barriers to become an efficient consultant starting with my very first project.
Talented network
It still amazes me how many brilliant, diverse, capable people work at McKinsey. In every project I encounter challenging issues but I never get frustrated because I have a strong belief in our superb knowledge network locally and globally. Our teams will strive to find the optimal solution for our clients utilizing the in-depth expertise and combined intelligence of the McKinsey global network. I also found people at McKinsey warm, inclusive, and respectful. This trait can be easily found in our alumni with whom I routinely socialize and reminisce while always getting constructive advice.
