Why McKinsey

Like most young management graduates, it was my dream to work with a firm as prestigious as McKinsey. But my story was slightly different than the others. I grew up watching my father take over a company as its CEO and longed to become one like him. When I later shared this, he said: “Son, if you want to become a CEO, go to McKinsey. You'll be CEO much quicker.” This had a profound impact on me. And ever since I joined the firm, I have come to realise how true his perception was.

Memorable moment

I was serving a life insurance giant. It had been the long-time dream for one of its senior executives to set up a training company for its employees, and we assisted him in realising it. Over a period of 6 months, we helped shape his vision into an executable reality. From recruiting the right people, to creating models and business plans, to setting up a governance rhythm and organisation structure, we defined to the last detail what this company would look like. That executive is now the CEO and personally thanked me and McKinsey in a public address for making it possible. The gratitude in his eyes and voice made me realise the power of our service to clients.

Nurturing environment

The ability of people in the firm to coach and mentor junior colleagues is what really makes us distinctive. I have appreciated the culture of apprenticeship at every stage. The learning curve is steep, but I always felt there was always someone I could fall back on—my questions were answered, and people went out of their way to make me successful. Every step of the way has been a learning experience because of the firm's flexibility. When I joined, I was anxious to know if I’d have any time for myself. But apart from a few hard days, I have always had the time to exercise, learn a new instrument, go on vacation, and have an active social life. Essentially, I’ve had complete independence in terms of my time. This has been a very pleasant surprise.

Just “Go For It”

My advice to someone thinking of joining would be simple—just go for it! The firm is the best place to come if you want to learn, grow, and make a difference. And the firm rewards you for it.
