Why McKinsey
On campus, students had no doubt that McKinsey was the most prestigious consulting firm. Also, the commitment of the campus alumni at McKinsey was amazing—they spent so much time with us aspirants in helping us know about and connect with the firm. Working with a team of people who are knowledgeable and self-motivated remains my driving force.
Most memorable experience
To choose any one special moment would be to undermine the 100 others that came along. What’s been truly memorable is the journey—so enriching, that work is a joy. Professionally, I have outgrown myself beyond my years; I've learned more about leadership here than I ever could have anywhere else. Personally, the most significant contribution to my life has been meeting my husband at McKinsey. We were working together on a project in my 1st year and were married 2 years later.
Caring meritocracy
With the kind of talent here, one would expect it to be internally competitive. I think the biggest revelation for me is how we internally align to be a “caring meritocracy” while being externally competitive. I knew I'd have the chance to work with terrific colleagues and senior clients when I joined McKinsey, but what has really surprised me about the firm is the flexibility it offers. This is true both for my personal and professional life. Some time back, I needed to take a leave of absence from work, and McKinsey supported me the entire time. While at work, I've been able to create my own path—no one has ever pushed me into any role.
Why join?
To any prospective colleague, I would just say this: think straight about how to get here because the journey after that is incredibly exciting. It's people who deliver value, and the best of them are here.
