Career development

Exceeding your expectations

Leadership is at the core of who we are. We are not a corporation tied to earnings pressures, but a firm free to take a long-term perspective on issues like expansion and client service. Leadership in the firm is not about rising above the rest, but helping others—consultants and clients—to exceed their own expectations.

Our consultants often take varied paths through their careers at McKinsey—and beyond. Many of our Alumni hold leadership roles in the private, public and social sectors in India and across the world.

We encourage individual flexibility and provide a broad range of opportunities to meet people, make friends, and build networks that can help you wherever your career takes you. We know that a full, happy life outside McKinsey makes you a stronger contributor inside McKinsey and are open to different life plans for you to thrive—full-time, part-time, and McKinsey’s own, Take Time.

Learning every day

You'll work in a highly collaborative way in small teams made up of McKinsey colleagues and usually several key client staff. You get to work on a variety of client engagements and knowledge initiatives across industries and functions, also will have an opportunity to work in multiple geographies.

We treat your growth as mission critical. That’s why we invest $100 million each year on innovative learning and training programs. And even more in knowledge R&D. There are training programs for each stage in your tenure, from the basics of business management to problem-solving, from communicating with impact to building client relationships, from working effectively in teams to becoming a leader.

Developing global leaders

At McKinsey, we have strong relationships with industry and government and help build global leaders. Our consultants learn to deliver impact at scale, build capabilities, and contribute to nation building.

People who join McKinsey find themselves part of a distinctive network shaped by shared values and a desire to help each other and their clients. When consultants leave, their connection to our firm remains strong and helpful. Our consultants often take varied paths through their careers at McKinsey—and beyond.  In fact, one in five of our alumni have started their own entrepreneurial ventures. And more than 300 are CEOs of companies with revenues north of $1 billion.
