About Shrey

Shrey Viranna is a partner in McKinsey’s Johannesburg office and leads our healthcare work in sub-Saharan Africa. He is a medical doctor and is passionate about improving health across the region. Shrey has a particular interest in public healthcare and health-system reform, and also works with major private healthcare players to help them shape their African growth strategies.

In public healthcare in Africa, Shrey’s work has included developing a transformation approach for a major regional public-sector healthcare system, supporting a Ministry of Health on health-system reform, and helping strengthen a country’s HIV/AIDS response. He has also conducted an in-depth review of maternal health outcomes and developed a mobile health program to improve primary healthcare provision.

In private healthcare, Shrey’s experience includes designing Africa-wide growth strategies and operating models for major pharmaceutical players, hospital groups, and medical devices companies. He has also evaluated disease trends to identify growth opportunities in the pharmaceutical sector, and supported the creation of a branded generics business model for a multinational pharmaceutical business.

Shrey also leads McKinsey’s Implementation Practice in sub-Saharan Africa, working with clients across a range of sectors to ensure that planned performance improvements are executed and sustained. Shrey brings rich experience from multiyear transformation programs, and he previously led McKinsey’s Purchasing Practice in sub-Saharan Africa.

Before joining McKinsey, Shrey worked as a medical doctor in South Africa in various public-health institutions ranging from primary healthcare clinics to tertiary hospitals. He also served in the military as a doctor, managing two clinics for the South African National Defence Force.
