About Christine
Christine Wu is a partner in McKinsey’s Johannesburg office and a core leader of our Financial Institutions Group in sub-Saharan Africa. A particular area of interest is balance-sheet management: Christine has developed a balance-sheet optimisation methodology and helped several major African and European banks apply it in their own businesses.
Christine draws on her broad experience in financial services to support the growth and economic impact of banking and capital markets in Africa. For example, she has led a major program to transform a bank’s corporate banking and small-and-medium-enterprise sales force. She has also developed African market-entry strategies for international banks; and has led strategy design for an African banking group, including financial modeling and identification of key initiatives.
Christine has also worked with a leading mobile operator to review its mobile money strategy—a key theme in increasing the accessibility of financial services in Africa. She has also conducted a comprehensive operations review for a leading capital-market player, helping it meet its ambitions for rapid growth.
Outside of financial services, Christine has led a savings program for large national utility—from initiative identification to supplier negotiation—and helped bank $2 billion in savings as a result. She has also redefined the reporting and capital-assurance standards for a publicly owned company; and redesigned the capital-project-governance mechanism for a large logistics player.
Christine is a member of South African Institute of Chartered Accountants and was placed in the top 10 in the Institute’s Board examination.
Before joining McKinsey, Christine worked at a major accounting firm, advising clients on listing requirements and due diligence.
