Sergio is the managing partner of McKinsey's Mexico office, and leads our Financial Services Practice in Mexico. Since joining McKinsey in 1998, he has served leading retail and wholesale banks and insurance carriers—in Brazil, Central America, Mexico, and the United States—on strategy, operations, organization, sales, distribution, and risk topics.
Sergio’s recent client engagements include supporting several financial-services companies in driving growth in Mexico. For example, he designed and implemented a 3-year growth strategy for a leading Mexican bank, including a significant efficiency effort. He also helped a global financial institution define its entry strategy for the wealth-management business in Mexico, including designing its value proposition and business model.
Sergio has also helped clients develop strategies for particular segments and business units. For a commercial bank, he designed winning strategies for segments including payroll and small and midsize enterprises. For an international financial group, he helped design and launch initiatives to capture market opportunities among binational households and cross-border businesses.
Sergio brings broad experience in helping financial institutions strengthen their organizations. For a global bank, for example, he designed the organization structure for its credit-card operations across 25 countries. He created a consumer-credit unit within a leading bank in Mexico. And, he assisted a leading Latin American institution in postmerger management of private-banking operations abroad.
Prior to joining McKinsey, Sergio worked in the treasury area of the Mexican subsidiary of an American bank and as the business manager of the technical division of an international package-manufacturing firm in Mexico. In addition, he was the cofounder and director of a desktop-publishing company.
