Creating value in many different ways
McKinsey advises clients who are undergoing defining moments, across a wide range of industries. There are so many ways in which we have impact. For example, in one project I worked on, we created value by questioning the need for a huge capital-investment project that was running behind schedule. Our analysis proved that the conditions that gave rise to the initial need for the project were no longer present. Within a few weeks, we helped our client present to the CEO, resulting in a decision not to go ahead with the project—and, in the process, saving several hundred million dollars.
Trust-based relationships with clients
Another experience that stands out for me is more personal in nature. After a meeting with a client, he asked us to stay for a few minutes. He had been offered an important position at another company and wanted to know our thoughts on the offer. He asked every member of the McKinsey team—from business analyst to partner—what each of us would do if we were in his shoes. He then thanked us, saying that he felt comfortable in making his decision because of the level of trust he had in us. He compared that trust to the relationship that develops between a patient and his physician. This meant a lot to me, and I have subsequently developed a close relationship with that person.
By nature, I am curious and keen to discover new things—and for someone like me, McKinsey provides unparalleled opportunities for personal and professional growth.
I’ve developed and honed my skills, both analytic and interpersonal. Having exposure to the top management of our clients—in business, government, and not-for-profits—has increased my confidence that my contribution counts.
Exhilarating work, close bonds
Working in this field is exhilarating. You will constantly be encouraged to work outside of your comfort zone, both by clients and by your colleagues. It is all part of our obligation to help one another grow professionally. We work in an intense way, which fosters a great sense of teamwork and forges close bonds among us—relationships that extend beyond the months that we work together on a particular project.
