Seeing that I can personally make a difference in the way my clients make decisions, solve problems, and develop as individuals is tremendously rewarding.

I completed a master’s in strategy, during which I founded and organized an international case competition for graduate students. Before joining McKinsey, I completed a national leadership program with a large financial services institution and then worked as a consultant in productivity improvement with another large financial institution. I also travelled throughout Europe and China.

Learning on the job

I chose McKinsey because of the array of high-impact projects, the opportunities for personal development, and the quality of the people. I knew I’d have amazing opportunities, but I underestimated how broad and limitless the possibilities would be—you truly do make your own McKinsey. My first study was an IT architecture project in the banking industry. I knew very little about IT architecture and the client’s products, and I was overwhelmed by all the technical terms and acronyms I had to master. On many occasions, the two associates on the study took time to go to the whiteboard to explain the concepts and illustrate them visually. The team trusted in my ability to contribute and took the necessary time to ramp me up. This is just one of the many examples I could share about the exceptionally supportive team environment at McKinsey.

Global scope

I was in charge of setting up and coordinating a transformation office for a large cost-reduction program that was deployed simultaneously in Canada and in Africa. I worked with the African team to identify the tools and process needed to track progress and impact and with colleagues from New York and Singapore to have our requirements implemented in the web-based software. Members of the on-site client service team came from England, France, India, New Zealand, Morocco, the United States, and Canada. It was amazing to see talented, dedicated people from around the world collaborating on a single study.
