Technology is central to the strategic questions facing North American telcos today. Their traditional “wireline” voice businesses are being commoditized. Emerging technologies open up new product opportunities – wireless, digital voice features, Voice over IP, IP-based video. But these new technologies are attracting many new market entrants. The need to stay ahead has accelerated the required pace of innovation.
To complicate matters, telcos rely on ageing systems to run their daily operations – connecting new customers, directing maintenance crews, or sending out accurate monthly itemized bills. Some of these systems are decades old. Trying to bolt new digital services onto these legacy systems is like trying to add new plastic pipes to old brass plumbing. Technology-based innovation can be slow to implement.
Our client, one of the major US telcos, was planning the launch of a new IP-based service. They found that it would take over a year to add the new service to the existing infrastructure. That was far too long. Our team worked with the client to find a solution that could support the new services during a trial period, while permanent solutions were found.
