About Norbert
Norbert is a director in McKinsey’s South Africa office and the leader of our global Social Sector Practice. Since relocating to South Africa in 2002, he has focused on serving clients that have a significant impact on the growth and development of South Africa.
Norbert has deep expertise in large-scale transformation programs, business building, postmerger management, lean transformation and delivery, and frontline productivity. He has extensive experience in a wide range of industries in sub-Saharan Africa and Europe, spanning both public and private sectors. He has worked with state-owned enterprises, utilities, railroads and other critical infrastructure sectors, and precious-metals companies.
He has also supported nongovernmental organizations, both professionally and personally. He serves as a board member of the Social Advancement Foundation in Johannesburg, a nonprofit organization that supports disadvantaged people by providing them with relevant consulting services and financial donations.
Norbert joined McKinsey in 1998 in the Munich office. He relocated to the South Africa office in 2002, where he was the office manager from 2006 until mid-2012, and he played an essential role in setting up McKinsey’s presence in Nigeria. During that time he also led McKinsey’s Africa Council, whose aim is to help continue to grow McKinsey’s involvement in the region.
He holds an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley and an MS in aeronautical engineering from the Technical University of Munich.
