About Florian
Florian helps lead our global Semiconductors Practice and is based in Munich. He is also a core leader of our Operations Practice in Europe, where he directs our work in product development. He supports global clients on issues related to operational improvements and transformations with a specific focus on R&D and supply-chain topics.
Since joining McKinsey in 1999, Florian has served semiconductor-equipment companies, integrated device manufacturers (IDMs), foundries, and fabless players. He also serves original-equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the high-tech and automotive industries.
Examples of his recent work include the following:
- leading the manufacturing turn-around of a foundry fab, improving its core processes, streamlining critical tools, and introducing stringent performance management processes on the shop floor
- advising a memory IDM on a process transformation that included a restructuring of predevelopment work, the acceleration of R&D wafer experiments, the introduction of lean engineering principles, and other improvement levers, generating a substantial reduction in time to market
- helping an analog mixed-signal foundry use benchmarks and shop-floor observations to improve the performance of its wafer-fabrication business
- supporting a leading semiconductor-equipment company on a lean R&D transformation, which included better coordination between R&D and manufacturing, as well as more standardized planning and working methods
- helping an industry leader to grow its market share through new technology and customer strategies
Florian studied physics at Oxford University and the University of Munich. He holds a master’s degree in physics from the University of Munich and a doctorate in economic geography from Friedrich Schiller University of Jena. He is based in Munich.
