About Lorenz

Lorenz is a leader in our global Basic Materials and Risk practices. Since joining McKinsey in 2002, he has primarily served companies in the energy and metals and mining industries in Europe, South Africa, and the United States. He leads several McKinsey knowledge initiatives on gas trading and risk management in the basic-materials sector, with a focus on steel and nonferrous metals.

In his recent work with clients, Lorenz has supported leading international producers of stainless steel on comprehensive operational-transformation programs, helped a European gas importer develop a trading function and the risk-management model to support it, advised a German utility company on defining and implementing a midstream business model and target portfolio, and helped a South African rail and freight company execute its growth strategy. In addition, he has supported numerous energy and basic-materials clients on strategy and due-diligence projects.

A native of Germany, Lorenz is based in Johannesburg. Before joining McKinsey, he was a research fellow at the University of Cologne Institute for Theoretical Physics and at the Society for Mathematics and Information Technology.
