About Carsten
Carsten leads our Electric Power & Natural Gas Practice in Europe and directs our work with energy, mining, and basic-materials companies in the region. He is also a leader in our Risk Practice in Europe, with a particular focus on market, trading, and commodity risk.
Based in Düsseldorf, Carsten has advised clients not only on risk-management issues but also on strategy, post-merger integration, and comprehensive operational-performance improvement. Among other recent projects, he has helped companies in a number of ways:
- Establishing international trading benchmarks for more than 10 European utilities
- Developing commodity trading strategies for coal, gas, oil, power, and carbon dioxide for several international energy companies
- Defining a hedging strategy for a cross-commodity, cross-regional asset portfolio
- Building an integrated, pan-European trading house for a major European energy company
- Completing the vertical and horizontal integration of several energy companies
Carsten joined McKinsey in 1996. He holds a doctorate in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Aachen, where he also worked as a researcher and lecturer while studying economics at the University of Hagen.
