About Peter

Peter leads our Consumer Packaged Goods and Retail activities in Asia, working with leading consumer companies globally to drive growth through format innovation, category development, and geographic expansion, including alliances and acquisitions. In almost 30 years as a consultant he has overseen major transformation programs encompassing sourcing, end to end supply chain efficiency, operational excellence, capability-building and performance management. He has also worked with many senior executives to shape their strategic and personal agendas. Peter works across many categories, a variety of retail formats, most regions, and almost all retail business functions.

Recent examples of Peter’s work include shaping and executing growth and geographic expansion plans for retailers in Europe, Asia, and South America, partly through mergers and acquisitions. He has also served multiple clients on new format innovation and category expansion to capture growth opportunities and improve economics. Peter helps retailers sharpen their commercial value proposition across merchandizing and marketing, and works with clients to bring about organizational revitalization and build new capabilities in areas such as merchandising, purchasing, and category management. He also applies innovative “lean retailing” techniques to streamline supply chains, store operations, and front-line customer service.

Peter created and hosted the McKinsey Retail Forum, a regular meeting point for industry executives, and sits on the organizing committee of the annual CEO Summit of the Consumer Goods Forum, which brings together more than 800 leaders from the food retailers, consumer goods manufacturers, and service providers. His research helped lay the foundations of CRM, pioneer the application of Lean principles to retail operations, and develop thinking around the management of complexity.

An Engineering graduate from Cambridge University, Peter started his career with the UK Atomic Energy Authority, then worked in France, Germany, Nigeria and Brazil for Michelin. He subsequently completed an MBA at INSEAD, where on finishing first in his class he was awarded the Henry Ford prize.
