About Richard
Richard is a leader in our Public Sector Practice and helps direct our work with defense and security organizations. Over the past several years, he has focused primarily on helping clients address issues of strategy, operations, and organizational design at both the state and federal level.
In addition to his work in the public sector, Richard serves capital-intensive industrial clients in the fields of power generation, chemicals, steel, shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing, explosives, and basic manufacturing. Examples of his recent work include the following:
- helping a defense service understand and make decisions on key strategic trade-offs
- helping a federal agency evaluate and improve its field intelligence operations, redesign roles and responsibilities, and enhance its capabilities in program management and talent management
- advising a defense agency on how best to develop its human-capital strategy and improve its marketing and recruiting functions
- supporting the enhancement of a leadership development program aimed at senior-level government executives
- leading an effort to redesign the operations of an aircraft manufacturer to improve on-time, in-full delivery of airframes
- leading a series of lean manufacturing efforts to improve supply-chain effectiveness and efficiency at a global aerospace company’s plants
As a leader in our Organization Practice, Richard helped develop our proprietary thinking on how to diagnose and improve organizational health. He also helped found our organizational analytics group.
Prior to joining McKinsey in 1994, Richard was a program and technical manager for the US Air Force, where he helped design and build the world’s largest ground-based satellite-tracking system. He holds a BA in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA with honors from the University of Virginia. He serves on the board of the nonprofit organization Athletes for Hope and is a member of Business Executives for National Security.
