Nicolaus is the leader of our Healthcare Systems & Services Practice in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa and is chairman of the McKinsey Health Institutes.
Nicolaus serves more than 20 health systems around the world. As a senior counselor to chief executives, senior clinicians, healthcare thought leaders, and government leaders, he helps address strategic and governance issues.
The value of healthcare is the main focus of Nicolaus’ work, both with his clients and in his research. He leads, with others, a global network connecting representatives from major health systems. Members of the group measure the cost and value of the healthcare they provide and help each other to improve value.
Another main research interest is how health systems can improve value by taking a pathway-based approach, such as better managing chronic diseases by more tightly integrating different forms of patient care. Based on this work, Nicolaus advises health systems on health reforms, total system design and transformation, financial sustainability, and leadership and governance.
A frequent speaker at major healthcare conferences and global events, Nicolaus also convenes leading private networks of executives in academic medicine, integrated care, and value improvement through pathway methodology.
Nicolaus serves on the board of the International Partnership for Innovative Healthcare Delivery at Duke Medicine, which he helped to found. He also serves on the boards of the Nuffield Trust in the UK of and the Guys and St Thomas Charity in London.
With a masters and a doctorate from the University of Münster, Nicolaus was a John J. McCloy scholar at Harvard while earning a Masters in Public Administration. He has also worked in our Düsseldorf, Berlin, and New York offices.
