About Jiri

Jiri helps lead the Infrastructure practice in the Americas. He is also a global leader in the Operations practice, where his work focuses on capital productivity.

Since joining McKinsey in 1997, Jiri has advised a range of clients around the world on multi-billion dollar capital projects. He has worked on more than 35 mega projects in the infrastructure, mining, electric power, and oil and gas sectors. Projects have spanned the Americas, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Europe. Jiri’s efforts have led to several advances in our internal knowledge of mega projects, including the development of a “gold standard” value assurance tool, an advanced portfolio risk-return analytical technique, and McKinsey’s standard approach for identifying, evaluating, and managing risk in mega projects. A frequent contributor to The Globe and Mail, Jiri has also been published in a number of scholarly journals.

Examples of his recent work include:

Working with the executive team of a leading engineering and construction firm to review and redirect its corporate strategy and address multiple operational and organizational challenges.

  • Supporting the execution of value improvement efforts for numerous mega projects, thereby reducing capital expenditures by 15-35%, and ensuring dramatically improved economic returns. Projects included freight rail, commuter rail, mining of various base and precious metals, electrical power, and on- and off-shore oil and gas projects.
  • Leading formal stage gate reviews on multiple mega-projects across the infrastructure, energy, and mining sectors and reporting directly to client executive teams and boards.
  • Working with a client to develop a contracting strategy, leading the request-for-proposal process, and supporting its selection of an engineering, procurement, and construction contractor for a multibillion dollar mining project in South America.
  • Advising a client on an in-process mining project in Africa and helping to implement the organizational capabilities, management process, and tracking tools necessary to regain control over the project and prevent further value erosion and delay.
  • Helping identify and mitigate the technology and execution risks associated with two unconventional energy mega projects valued at more than $10 billion.
  • Supporting a North American energy company as it optimized its investment portfolio on a risk-return basis and assessed the implications for balance sheet structure and financial liquidity, and possible reactions from capital markets.
