For more than 80 years, McKinsey has been a top destination for people with master's degrees in business administration. Typically, about 50 percent of our incoming consultants have MBAs, and we’re fully committed to finding top talent from business-school programs around the world.

If you have completed an MBA and have worked in industry or for other companies since finishing your program, please visit the experienced professional background page for relevant information.

Skills you can apply at McKinsey:

  • problem solving—developing hypotheses, collecting and analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations—prepares you well for what we do at McKinsey
  • intellectual curiosity, to want to answer questions others haven't been able to, and test solutions others haven't thought of trying
  • business knowledge and first-hand experience in a particular sector or function, which can be invaluable in solving client problems

Roles that might be a good fit:

  • MBA graduates typically join us as associates, working either as generalists or practice consultants, depending on their preference and interests.
  • MBA candidates in-between their first and second year may apply for an associate intern position—this is usually a 10-week internship during the summer.
  • Many individuals also choose to join as specialists or experts within groups, such as our Knowledge Network or as part of McKinsey Solutions or other specialized practices or functions. (see Our roles for more details)

How we’ll support you in your career

We invest heavily in providing support and training for all of our firm members. Our consultants benefit from several weeks of training in the first 2 years—from our Basic Consultant Readiness training in your first 2 weeks to more advanced programs on leadership and team management as you progress toward future roles. Programs run the gamut from our proprietary e-learning modules to office- or practice-based sessions to our formal global training curriculum.

Coaching and mentorship is an integral part of your development at McKinsey—you will have peers to give you feedback and senior partners to help you grow and collaboratively plan the next several years of your career.

Future opportunities

Your career path at McKinsey depends on your interests and goals. You may decide to specialize early to build on the expertise you developed in graduate school or in your past career, or you may apply your skills in new areas and broaden your exposure. Whatever path you create for yourself, you'll continually be challenged to grow.

Working at McKinsey will change you. You’ll grow and develop skills that will be a catalyst for future opportunities, both within our firm and beyond. McKinsey alumni have gone on to create companies, start not-for-profits, run large businesses, and pursue their passions in the arts, among many other endeavors.
