The Munich office is the largest one in the German complex. That size means there are lots of communities—groups and clubs around sports, wine, culture, photography, and choral singing organize many events throughout the year.
In 1994, firm members and alumni formed McKinsey Kinderhilfe e.V., an organization to help disadvantaged children in Poiana Soarelui, Romania. Today, the organization has grown to helping children in other parts around the world, from helping young people prepare for the working world to providing medical and psychological care to children with HIV.
Every year, there’s an office retreat—alternating between an event with our other German colleagues and one for just our office. Our last Munich office retreat was in Taba, Egypt, where we combined a professional development program with activities, such as visiting the pyramids. And it would be difficult to talk about the Munich office without mentioning Oktoberfest, the annual beer and social festival that brings tourists in from around the world. McKinsey provides a table for its people each year, no matter how large the crowds.
As part of the German office complex, we are involved in several nationwide efforts such as pro bono work for orchestras and museums, as well as for health care foundations and hospitals. We established “McKinsey bildet” to help reform and improve Germany’s education system. McKinsey also co-founded “Startsocial,” a nationwide competition of volunteer projects and initiatives where we provide consulting and other assistance.
