The Cologne office is the newest one in the German complex so it is relatively small. Our goal is to be the place to develop people leadership in the firm, so our partners are actively involved in the office community. Every second Friday, we have a Friday’s bar to get together and catch up.
Cologne has been the traditional center of Carnival since the Middle Ages, and our office has already become legendary for our Carnival parties. To help the local community, we founded an annual business plan competition in 1997 where our consultants actively coach the founders of new businesses.
We also host the Convention of Cologne’s Young Leaders, an exclusive forum for regular discussions with high-profile guest speakers. Our first office retreat was in Bad Brücken, where we had a “Casino Royale” to combine some fun with a chance to revisit our firm’s values. As one of the centers of Germany’s vibrant art scene, Cologne is a cultural hotspot that revolves around the world famous Cologne Cathedral.
As part of the German office complex, we are involved in several nationwide efforts, such as pro bono work for orchestras and museums, as well as for health care foundations and hospitals. We established “McKinsey bildet” to help reform and improve Germany’s education system. McKinsey also co-founded “Startsocial,” a nationwide competition of volunteer projects and initiatives where we provide consulting and other assistance.
