Friendships at McKinsey
You’ll make friends here that will last a lifetime
We spend a lot of time with each other—it’s the nature of our team-driven, client-focused culture. We do work hard, but the bonds of friendship we develop while working together are powerful and often last a lifetime, whether consultants stay at McKinsey or go somewhere else.
Our offices also create opportunities for us to get to know each other better. Informal lunches, drinks at the end of the week, parties, and retreats are all important ways we build and strengthen our friendships.

“The great thing about McKinsey is that it is a very young and energetic culture. I have made so many friends with people that I have worked with closely.“

“Many of my lifelong friends are people I’ve met through McKinsey. We vacation together. We go away for weekends. And it’s not because I have to do it for business reasons. It’s just that they’re great people.”

“The team environment and camaraderie are a big part of the McKinsey experience. Being together all day, you get to know people’s quirks and personality traits. A team becomes like a little family. When I was working in the Delhi office, I was invited to my teammates’ homes for dinner and out to the movies on the weekends.”

“We’ve had a lot of fun events. We’ve gone to basketball games, attended baseball games and had some great dinners getting to know each other. I’ve also attended office retreats in Colorado, Cancun and Florida, which are a way to interact with the office in a non-work setting, catch some sun and have a party.”

“My husband and I do an annual bike trip in Napa Valley. A number of McKinsey partners who are friends of ours have come on that trip with their spouses. It’s very fun.”

“We once had our whole client service team of 20 or 25 people on a weekend retreat in Sweden. There were quite a few I had never met or had only spoken to on the phone. We had a great time there. Diving into a frozen lake together does create quite a bond.”
