Back to Our women's perspectives

Meredith's perspective

Plenty of biomedical engineers love golf, but how many can snowboard, too? Like many women at McKinsey, Meredith has been able to take a sabbatical and earn her MBA. She loves exploring foreign cities, from Copenhagen to Dallas, with her friends and mentors.

August 2013

The past few months have been a whirlwind with new projects, travel (both for work and for vacation), and a lot of fun. Let me tell you about some of the highlights:

Punting with two colleagues
EM College

It is a McKinsey tradition to recognize newly designated engagement managers (EMs) by sending us to Cambridge, England to connect with colleagues from around the world, go through training, and learn about the different practices, sectors, and functions across McKinsey. Along with several hundred other EMs, I spent the week in Cambridge and had a great time. I especially enjoyed the women's program that kicked off the week, the healthcare breakout sessions plus dinner, and the strategy workshops (one of my focus areas is strategy and corporate finance). I am constantly in awe of my colleagues and I feel so fortunate to work with such thoughtful, brilliant, hysterical individuals who want to make the world a better place.

With Chris at our friend's wedding
Vacation to Mexico and Maine

Over our July Fourth holiday, my husband Chris and I headed down to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to soak in some sun, zipline, and relax on the beach. After some much needed rest and many necessary grilled fish tacos, we then flew to Maine to visit his family. It was an absolutely perfect week in Maine! We got to see the whole family and enjoyed delicious food, wakeboarding on the lake, and spending time with friends.

Exciting work projects

As part of a collaboration with McKinsey’s Objective Health (a McKinsey Solution for healthcare providers), I am working to build an iPad application that will help nurses make day-to-day decisions. It has been a great way to learn how our consulting work can live on for a long time with our clients. I am certainly not the programming expert of the bunch, but it is great to see how the process works and be able to shape the tools in a way that will most benefit the people who use them.

Over the next few weeks I will be working on a short hospital strategy project in California. I am getting to know my new team and also getting excited to welcome our new hires who are joining us as full time consultants. I am sad to see the summer end, but looking forward to an action-packed fall.

Best wishes,

Meredith

Meredith

Engagement manager
San Francisco Office

Meredith joined the San Francisco office in fall 2007 after graduating from Dartmouth College and Thayer School of Engineering with a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering. She mainly serves health care payor and provider clients, as well as various not-for-profit clients in global health. She took a 2-year educational leave of absence while she earned her MBA at Tuck, and returned to McKinsey full-time in 2012. Outside of work, Meredith enjoys spending time with family and friends, snowboarding, cooking, hiking, golfing (although not well), and traveling.
