LGBT consultants at McKinsey

McKinsey is a place where LGBT people thrive.

GLAM (Gay, lesbian, bi, and trans at McKinsey) is a vibrant, connected, worldwide network of LGBT colleagues who are committed to each other’s success and to attracting more talented LGBT women and men into the McKinsey community.

Our commitment to LGBT equality was confirmed in 1995 when a group of entrepreneurial colleagues formally created our LGBT professional network. With strong support from McKinsey leadership and the broader organization, GLAM has evolved and grown to include men and women (our fastest growing segment) from all orientations and all regions across the globe. The network is a respected advisor to McKinsey leaders on LGBT policies and benefits. We’re proud of the perfect score of 100 we’ve earned in the HRC Corporate Equality Index every year since 2006, when we first joined the survey.

What does GLAM do?

We support McKinsey as a place that attracts, supports, respects, and retains talented lesbian, gay, bi, and trans professionals.

We create an environment where LGBT members of McKinsey can develop and grow to their full potential.

How we do it: connectivity and development

Mentorship and conversation with openly LGBT senior leaders has a huge impact. McKinsey sponsors regular professional development conferences for our GLAM network—all GLAM consultants worldwide are invited. We get close to 100% attendance.

According to one recent participant, “The London global GLAM conference was beyond inspirational—it was life-changing. It’s changed my McKinsey. It’s so much bigger and so much more potent now; and there’s so much more I want to achieve.”

The ties built at conferences continue to grow afterwards through personal connection, social networking and office-based events. GLAM consultants also have the option to attend some of McKinsey’s world-class leadership development programs with an LGBT cohort.

How we do it: create a welcoming and caring environment

McKinsey’s open culture and diverse, welcoming environment have made it a leader in LGBT equality. We believe that the same values which drive the excellence of our client work—respect for talent, the importance we place on individual development and personal satisfaction—have accelerated our LGBT leadership.

McKinsey colleagues and GLAM members in many offices have organized “GLAM Allies” groups. From Munich to Taipei, from Johannesburg to New Jersey, from Toronto to Rio, GLAM and GLAM Allies collaborate to offer social and educational events to all colleagues.

How we do it: recruiting

McKinsey has sought LGBT talent for years. We are the founding sponsor of all three major U.S. LGBT recruiting conferences—Reaching Out MBA (ROMBA), Out for Undergraduates in Business (OUBC), and IvyQ.

Similarly, around the world, McKinsey sponsors Eur OUT MBA conference in the UK, Sticks and Stones career conference in Germany and Out on Bay Street conference in Canada.

You can find our LGBT consultants at many schools meeting with students and providing insight into the working and welcoming environment at McKinsey.

Members of our GLAM community from different tenures are available as recruiting buddies for LGBT candidates. We can answer questions about LGBT professional life at McKinsey in your region.

A note from Partner Lead of Global Recruiting, Brian Rolfes

“As one of the co-founders of GLAM almost 20 years ago, and as an out gay man since joining, my experiences at McKinsey have been nothing short of inspiring. Now that I lead McKinsey’s global recruiting, I am particularly excited and proud to welcome diverse talent to share that same experience.”

Dominic Barton, Managing Director

“McKinsey is proud of the impact of GLAM over the years which has made us a true global leader on LGBT issues. Our policies set the global standard, our LGBT related client work – pro bono and other – has had tremendous impact, and our GLAM colleagues provide an inspiring role model to others by being themselves – openly and honestly.”more
