Types of consultants at McKinsey

Generalist and practice-based consultant positions

Generalist and practice-based consultants are the primary client team members, managing and contributing to the client project on a day-to-day basis throughout the engagement. They work across a range of industries and functions. Most generalist and practice-based consultants enter McKinsey as business analysts or associates. Progression is based solely on merit—not on tenure or client hours billed.

Subject matter expert positions

Subject matter experts generally join McKinsey with significant industry experience. At McKinsey, they become consultants who are affiliated with a practice and work across a number of client teams to provide problem-solving expertise in a specific functional area. Most subject matter experts enter McKinsey as specialists or experts. Progression is based on the merits of their contributions in terms of knowledge and client impact.
