– Meet Thomas, a partner in our Sydney office (and the man in orange in the photo), who focuses on leading transformations for mining and oil & gas companies. Thomas has always been passionate about people; in addition to his client service, he guides our recruiting and training & development programming for the Global Energy & Materials and Operations practices in Australia.
Interviewer: What brought you to McKinsey?
Thomas: When I was studying at the Aarhus School of Business in Denmark, I had no idea what McKinsey did. I met a few McKinsey consultants through an event at my university. They piqued my interest in the profession and the firm. I interned in the Copenhagen office and really enjoyed the experience in terms of my project and my team mates. McKinsey met a lot of my career expectations, so it didn't take me long to accept my full time offer.
Interviewer: What prompted your move from Copenhagen to Australia?
Thomas: When I joined McKinsey, I was excited about the global reach of the firm and the opportunities to work in different cultures with different people. During my time as junior associate and associate, I worked in the Middle East for a year, and later spent time in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. I moved to Australia to focus on building the Oil & Gas practice in the region.
Interviewer: What do you like about working in Global Energy & Materials?
Thomas: I like the impact and the people. The impact we can achieve is not only relevant for our clients but also for communities and governments. And the people – I feel related to them and I really enjoy working with them.
Interviewer: What advice would you give to others considering joining McK?
Thomas: If you are looking for a dynamic, diverse, people-oriented work environment focused on solving tough problems, McKinsey is the perfect place for you. Each engagement is different and you never really know what your day will be like.
Interviewer: What are you passionate about outside of work?
Thomas: Spending time with my family and friends and exploring some of the earth's most beautiful places.
