– Meet Peter, a service operations expert based in Copenhagen:
Interviewer: What is your favorite thing about McKinsey?
Peter: The only person holding me back is me. I have developed a passion for helping clients improve their customers’ experience. When I'm waiting in a queue at the airport or for my coffee, I’m always thinking about how well the customer service providers have considered the whole experience. And I have found colleagues who share my enthusiasm. It’s been so much fun.
Interviewer: What do you wish you knew when you joined?
Peter: How large a portion of my role would be engaging and communicating with my team and clients. It is exciting to have continual daily interactions to help people make change happen.
Interviewer: What is your best interview tip?
Peter: Put yourself in the shoes of the interviewer. The people interviewing you are looking to hire colleagues with whom they will spend many hours, sometimes under pressure. So, make sure you share what is interesting about you.
Interviewer: What question are you most frequently asked about McKinsey?
Peter: "Don't you have to work 100 hours a week?" My response is, "we work as much as we need to deliver on our promises – that sometimes means long hours, but I regularly go running, socialize and spend time with my family. And I’ve never worked 100 hours a week!
Interviewer: What are you most passionate about outside of work?
Peter: I am the very proud father of a young family – Mateo (5 yrs), Atlas (3yrs), and Lima (2yrs) – so I spend a lot of my time at the local playground.
