McKinsey Q&A: Nóra

– Nóra, a recruiter based in Munich who specializes in finding experienced professionals for McKinsey Solutions, joined in March 2015 after spending several years working in Recruitment Process Outsourcing for KellyOCG and OSRAM. She’d been interested in McKinsey for a while, and was thrilled to learn we were looking for people like her with direct sourcing expertise to help find specialized talent for our new ventures. Now that she’s been part of our team for more than a year, learn what keeps her here and about her favorite experience so far.

Interviewer: Why did you apply to McKinsey?

Nora

Nóra: I followed McKinsey for some time, and always thought my core skills in direct sourcing - actively approaching people for hard-to-fill jobs – would not be needed by the firm. Such an exceptional employer surely wouldn’t have difficulty attracting the right people. Then I realized McKinsey was seeking new profiles for new roles – talent with backgrounds in advanced analytics or software development.

I found a posting on LinkedIn to join a team working to create awareness of these new positions through a proactive recruitment approach. The interview process really convinced me to join. Although there were several stages, I always knew where I stood and what to expect. I was impressed by how professional the process was and kept thinking to myself “this is exactly how recruiting should be done.” I couldn’t wait to join the team behind my application process.

Interviewer: What type of positions do you recruit for?

Nóra: I am responsible for roles within McKinsey Solutions across Europe. The Solutions group is a suite of services that combines McKinsey’s industry and functional expertise with data, proprietary analytics, and software tools. It’s very much like a collection of start-ups, so I look for very different people to do very different types of work. In the last year, I’ve supported seven solutions groups in six countries across a range of searches including economic modelling specialists for the oil & gas sector, software developers, pricing experts and specialists in organizational psychology.

Interviewer: What keeps you here?

Nóra: Several things – I love the opportunities for continued learning, the supportive culture, and the import the firm places on recruiting. I learn quickly, so in my previous jobs, I reached my comfort zone fairly quickly. Not with McKinsey! I don’t think there’s been a day I haven’t felt challenged and asked to face new situations. I particularly enjoy the high level of responsibility I have. The groups I support treat me as a business partner; they regularly seek my advice in structuring their teams and hiring.

The recruiting culture at McKinsey is exceptional – something I’ve never experienced. The firm knows its biggest asset is people. Colleagues regularly ask me how to be involved in recruiting. This is a real pleasure as a recruiter.

Interviewer: What has been your most rewarding experience so far?

Nóra: There have been many special moments. My favorite so far is a meeting I recently had with someone I hired. This person wasn’t considering McKinsey when I approached him. After several discussions, he decided to apply. Now, almost a year after joining, he wanted to thank me for bringing the opportunity to his attention. I loved hearing how he’s involved in projects and having impact he never thought possible.

Interviewer: What are you passionate about outside of work?

Nóra: I love being underwater; scuba diving is true relaxation for me. I’m planning on taking some time off over the next few years to volunteer in a marine reservation program. When on ground, I prefer backpacking; I can’t stay still for longer than a few days. I have a long bucket list of new places to visit and I frequently make time to visit my favorite city, Budapest.
