– Manuel is an analytics translator in our Analytics hub in Madrid. He initially joined our Lisbon office in 2010 as a generalist. After a few years away from the firm, our growing Analytics practice led him back in 2016.
During undergrad at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, I interned in McKinsey’s Lisbon office, then joined full-time as a generalist in 2010. I had a good experience, but I felt there was something missing; I wanted to have more involvement and control over implementing solutions and I wanted work on topics I felt were more cutting-edge. After about a year-and-a-half, I left McKinsey for a startup incubator in Australia. I became the head of marketing, which enabled me to learn a great deal about digital and to work in an impact-oriented, analytics-driven way. In this role, I started working with huge data sets and discovered my passion for analytics.
I returned to Europe and worked as an independent digital consultant for three years. During that time, I read tons of relevant articles published by McKinsey and kept in touch with former colleagues who were helping to build a new McKinsey Analytics hub in Madrid. Their work seemed very cutting-edge and impactful. I wanted to become part of McKinsey, to learn from some of the best analytics practitioners in the field and work with large clients, amazingly detailed and rich data sets, and tough business challenges.
I rejoined the firm in 2016 in Madrid and the rest, as they say, is history. Now I am working on a transformational program for a telecommunication company in South Africa. I am part of a team of more than 10 people who have very diverse backgrounds and skill sets. In my role as Analytics translator, I work with data scientists, data engineers, generalists, campaign experts, and implementation coaches. Our different perspectives enrich our problem-solving and provide deep expertise for the client.
Outside of project work, I love travelling and sight-seeing. Even when I am home in Madrid, I try to visit a new place every weekend. While working in South Africa, I’ve visited Zimbabwe and Victoria Falls. My teammates and I recently biked to Soweto and visited the Cradle of Humankind (see the photos).
