Writing and layout

A McKinsey-ready resume...

  • Uses a business-appropriate font that is set no smaller than 10-point type
  • Allows some margin around the text for reviewer’s notes
  • Is not overly creative with the formatting, which will distract from the real focus of the document—you
  • Uses clear language that has been checked (and rechecked) for spelling and grammar
  • Includes your name and contact details at the top, including your email address and phone number(s)
  • Lists your prior jobs (if applicable) in reverse chronological order, with your most recent role at the top
  • Preferably lists dates on the left hand side (Be prepared to explain any gaps in your career or educational history)
  • Is concise and not overly long without being incomplete
  • Considers the reader—the person reading your resume/CV may not be familiar with your specific credentials, so avoid using jargon. A good way to test this is to ask friends from different backgrounds to read it and point out any areas that sound confusing
