About Diedrik

Diedrik is a partner in McKinsey’s Brussels office, where he serves leading companies in the metals and mining industry on a global scale. He advises clients on strategy development, operational excellence, technical challenges, and performance transformations.

Diedrik has extensive experience of helping steelmakers optimize the value- in- use of concentrators, smelters, and steel plants. In a recent project, he supported a global leader in adopting this approach to optimize the quality and amount of scrap used in its steel shops. The client achieved substantial improvements in cost and throughput.

In another project, Diedrik helped a European steel company review its asset configuration to reduce fixed costs, improve capacity utilization, and increase the cost-competitiveness of key products. He has also worked on a number of projects that involved identifying potential acquisition targets, conducting technical and market due diligence, and assisting with merger and post-merger management.

Outside his client work, Diedrik leads our proprietary research on iron ore and steel. Before joining McKinsey, he was a research chemist at a life-sciences and material-sciences company in the Netherlands. He has a PhD in applied biological sciences and a degree in bio-engineering, both from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
