Since 2003, McKinsey & Company has been a strategic partner to the World Economic Forum, an international organization that works with political, business, academic, and other leaders to shape global, regional, and industry agendas and drive positive change on societal issues.

As a strategic partner, we play a leading role in the Forum, including at the annual meeting in Davos, where our participation is led by our global managing partner, Dominic Barton.

McKinsey collaborates on global industry partnerships to shape discussions—topics include “Shaping the Future of Oil and Gas” and “Shaping the Future Implications of Digital Media for Society.” We engage with the Forum’s initiatives, including the Global Shapers and Young Global Leaders programs for next generation leaders, and Global Future Councils, knowledge networks that promote innovative thinking on critical global issues.
Focusing Capital on the Long Term

Focusing Capital on the Long Term

In 2013, we worked with investment-management organizations to cofound the Focusing Capital on the Long Term (FCLT) initiative, to identify practical solutions to excessive short-termism by companies and investors. We have since helped FCLT expand its work to new partner organizations, incorporate as a new independent non-profit, FCLT Global, and hire a full-time team to lead the organization. We continue to work with FCLT Global and its corporate and investor members to develop practical structures, metrics, and approaches for longer-term behaviors in the investment and business worlds. Dominic Barton, our global managing partner, is a member of FCLT Global’s board.
New climate economy

New Climate Economy

The McKinsey Center for Business and Environment has worked with New Climate Economy (NCE) since its establishment in 2013, collaborating on research regarding the costs and benefits of climate action to help financial and economic decision makers identify and prioritize actions that can deliver better growth and lower climate risk. For example, we are working with NCE’s Coalition for Urban Transitions initiative to understand the economic case for better urban development, to enhance national economic, social, and environmental performance. NCE is the flagship project of the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate. Between 2013 and 2014, it was led by a McKinsey partner who was on sabbatical from the firm.

CDP

The CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) works with companies and cities across the world to measure and disclose their environmental information and put this information at the heart of business, investment and policy decision making. We collaborate with CDP on analysis and reporting for members of their Supply Chain program and on enhancing the tools and technology included as part of CDP’s Action Exchange initiative, which empowers participating suppliers to reduce emissions through financially beneficial means. Upstream greenhouse gas emissions are, in many downstream sectors, between two and seven times those of a company’s operational emissions, which makes it critical to build climate resilience into supply chains.

McKinsey is a founding member of UN Women’s Private Sector Leadership Advisory Council, which offers advice to organizations on accelerating women’s economic empowerment.

Dominic Barton, our global managing partner, is one of ten impact champions for UN Women’s HeForShe—a ground-breaking initiative which engages men and boys as advocates for gender equality and women’s rights.

As HeForShe champions, our commitment as a firm is to advance and promote gender equality within our own organization, across our clients, and in society more broadly. We have launched a global effort to accelerate progress toward gender parity across all roles in our firm, and we will continue to lead cutting-edge research and test approaches to advance gender diversity in the workplace more widely.

LeanIn.Org

Since 2007, our Women Matter research series has explored the role women play in the global workplace, their experiences and impact in senior-executive roles, and the performance benefits that companies gain from gender diversity.

In 2015, we partnered with LeanIn.Org to launch the first annual Women in the Workplace study. One hundred eighteen companies and nearly 30,000 employees participated in the 2015 study, which gives companies the data and insights they need to accelerate women’s paths into leadership.

LeanIn.Org offers women the ongoing inspiration and support to help them achieve their goals. It builds on Sheryl Sandberg’s book of the same name, which focuses on encouraging women to pursue their ambitions.
